Description

DTA Elective: Microscopy

This course will provide practical expertise relevant to DTA students of a range of microscope imaging techniques.

1. Scanning Electron microscopy including x-ray microanalysis.

2. Renishaw Laser Raman spectroscopy.

3. Leica Laser scanning confocal microscopy fluorescence.

4. Olympus LEXT Laser scanning confocal microscopy – reflected light 3D imaging

If you are interested in imaging a particular material, please contact G.Gillmore@kingston.ac.uk at least one week before the course. Due to preparation time where the SEM is concerned we will either look at in house material or your material if it is suitably pre-prepared. Examples of materials we can examine with the LEXT system are solid-state nuclear track detectors and volcanic ash particles etc.

Laser Raman spectroscopy is a technique used for the identification of a wide range of substances and involves illuminating a sample with monochromatic light and using a spectrometer to examine scattered light.

We would aim to be flexible and build the course around attendees specific interests as much as possible.

Learning outcomes:

1. Familiarisation with specialised microscope techniques

2. Building competence

3. Assessing which techniques are best suited to the material being examined

4. Learning the importance of preparation techniques for microscopy

Number of places available: Due to room size restrictions there are spaces for only 8 students (2 Energy, 6 Bioscience)

The elective is open to all DTA students from Biosciences & Energy DTA programmes
