Event description

Description

Writing and publishing a scientific paper (for Bioscience DTA students in their 2nd and 3rd years only)

To forge a career in science, you need to publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Not only so you get credit for your research, but also so that others can learn from your work, build on it and use it. And so that your research can make the world a better place!

But writing and publishing a paper isn’t easy, and the journal publishing system can be difficult to navigate.

This course will help you write journal papers and get them published in the most effective way. You will get insider insights from an expert trainer who knows scientific journals from many angles. You will have a chance to draft your own abstract and get individual feedback on it from an expert.

The course will combine presentations, discussion in small and large groups, writing exercises, internet research exercises, and one-to-one feedback from the trainer on your writing.

Target audience: This course is most suitable for DTA researchers who have some results already and are thinking about publishing them, i.e. DTA PhD students from the 2nd & 3rd years.
First priority to book on this elective will be given to 3rd year students and then opened up to 2nd year students.

Preparatory work: Please EITHER write an abstract in advance and bring it with you, OR bring brief notes about the main results that your paper would present and the conclusions you intend to draw so that you can write an abstract during the workshop. Your results can be preliminary or even made up if you do not yet have all the data. A laptop will be useful for the writing exercises but is not essential, and an internet-connected device (laptop, phone or tablet) will be useful for some exercises and for viewing the handout.

Trainer biography: Anna Sharman PhD is an experienced researcher trainer who has been a postdoc, an in-house biology journal editor and a scientific publishing consultant and now runs Cofactor, a scientific training and consultancy company. She can give insider insights into how to write and publish scientific journal papers most effectively.

Booking deadline: Wednesday 13 March 2019
