OP. OPFOR 2016: Op. Emerald ocean

About Op OPFOR:

Traditional (since 2002) Mil-Sim event, suitable for various players, ranging from hardcore LRRP units to more easy going mil-sim seeking players. Held on a vast main training grounds of Slovenian armed forces (OSVAD Poček)

SOMALIA:

After a brief time of relative peace, the countryside of Somalia is on fire again. In a border area between autonomous region of Somaliland and central Somalia the Islamic militias with the help of Al Shabaab have taken control of several villages and small towns. They are trying to enforce sharia law and cleanse the area of other religions and heretic western influences.

Federal government, fearing that Al Shabaab may commence an ethnical purge, deployed armed forces to the area. The supreme command of the armed forces decided to use units from African union. Units from both Kenyan and Ethiopian army are deploying to the region but remain under operational command of Somali armed forces.

When the news that well trained and equipped forces of African union are deploying to the area and not just poorly motivated Somali federal army reached them, the leaders of Al Shabaab immediately started connecting with local communities, which sustain themselves mainly by piracy and raiding off of the costal line of Aden bay. This alliance worked well in some while completely failing in other regions, mainly because those communities and their leaders are very unreliable, if there is no immediate profit to be seen.

In the occupied area theris also a significant portion clan Darod. The clan represents the majority of the population in the border area of neighboring Somaliland. Due to the Al Shabaab threat militias of clan Darod have formed in the border area of Somali, with the purpose of protecting their brethren over the border. Unofficially the are also receiving support of ruling elite in the autonomous region of Somaliland, which hope that with their help they may annex the area. Because they are both sunni and sufism, their relations with radical Islamic groups in the region is not so good, so the try to maintain a relatively good relationships with federal army, which is under severe pressure from Somaliland.

Al Shabaab

After sustaining major loses in the last few years and loosing their grip on the area, including major cities, the Islamic organization of Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen aka al Shabaab is trying, with the help of al-Qaeda on Arabic peninsula, to return on political map of Somalia with occupation of the northern part of the country, where they previously did not operate.

Main goals:

-control of the territory and battling infidels

Political relations:

Federal army: extremely hostile

Clan Darod: neutral

Pirate groups: allied

Dresscode:

Mainly green clothes. Some believe they never wear camouflage clothing because Allah shall hide them from their enemies, but the sight of them approaching can scare most people away. Due to salafistic tradition they do not wear western inventions such as helmets, boonie hats, baseball caps and plate carriers but only black scarves, shemaghs and (mostly Russian made) chest rigs.

Federal army

In the region federal army is represented by operational command of 1st Battalion 4th brigade. Under their command are also contingents from Kenyan and Etiopian army, operating under mission of African union. Each contingent represents integrated combat group of light infantry platoon with adjoined highly trained unconventional warfare fireteams. Specialized units as well as command and logistical support is provided by Somali federal army.

Main goals:

Control of the area and eliminations of Al Shabaab

Political relations:

Al Shabab: hostile

Pirate groups: hostile

Clan Darod: neutral

Uniform: Kenyan army equipped their units with combat sets in woodland patterns. Etiopian army decided on combat sets in desert camouflage. Combat sets consist of: bullet-proof vests-plate carriers, helmet, boonie, uniform (single pattern). Baseball caps, shemaghs and chest rigs are forbidden.

Pirate groups

Pirate groups got involved in the conflict mainly because Al Shabaab promised monetary rewards and goats, but also because some of their leaders formed alliances with Al Shabaab and want their revenge on federal army, which has supported autonomous provinces Puntland and Somaliland in their battles against pirates which have reduced piracy for as much as 60% since 2009.

Main goal:

battle against the military and profit. A lot.

 Political relations:

Al Shabaab: neutral

Federal army: hostile

Clan Darod: neutral

Traditional clothing: pirates are very ununiformed. Most of them wear camouflage pants in one or the other dessert pattern, have a dark(er) (black, dark brown) top, however they all wear red or yellow scarves and red baseball caps.

Available again!

Clan Darod

Clan Darod militias are officially involved in conflict to protect their brethren from pressures and repression from federal government, Al Shabaab and other tribal militias. However, intelligence agencies believe that the true reason for their involvement in the conflict is a clandestine attempt to annex the area to autonomous region of somaliland, where most members of the clan live. Because they are sunni Muslims, more radical Islamic groups are often hostile to them.

 Main goal:

control of the area

Political relations:

Al Shabaab: neutral

Federal army: neutral

Pirate groups: neutral

Traditional clothing: militia members of clan Darod are recognizable by desert coulored clothing. Pants often feature one of the many dessert patterns. They use baseball caps in green colour.
