Event description
The Dundee Urban Forum is a research event exploring the impact of Covid-19 on the City's Creative Economies and policy

About this event

The Urban Studies Foundation Seminar Series “European Creative Cities & Covid-19: Exploring Urban Creative Economies and Policies in the age of Covid-19” is organised by Dr Lauren England (University of Dundee), Dr Ugo Rossi (Gran Sasso Science Institute) and Professor Sami Moisio (University of Helsinki).

Even before the Covid-19 crisis, urban creative economies and policies scholarship needed to be readdressed to develop more inclusive and sustainable models for development. This need has been heightened by a pandemic in which Creative and Cultural Industries have been among the worst-hit sectors of the economy alongside radical changes to population distribution and interaction within and with urban spaces and transformations in creative production and cultural engagement.

The first of the three Urban Forums is hosted by the University of Dundee, Scotland, chaired by Dr Lauren England.

The Forum will begin with a presentation from a local scholar, Dr Husam Al Waer, followed by an online workshop by Professor Mel Woods on virtual co-production methods (using visual collaboration platform Miro). The workshop will introduce participants to the platform, with a learning through doing approach. Small group activities will address the theme of "Creative City Futures".

A local round table will then take key themes from the workshop to discussed in the local context of Dundee, continuing to making use of the Miro platform as a collaborative discussion space. A Southern city discussion will follow, supporting expanded mutual learning with discussion on the impact of Covid-19 on the city’s creative economy, alternative forms of creativity and urban interaction emerging during the pandemic and local opportunities for sustainable and inclusive (re)development.

Please note this is an online-only event due to Covid-19 restrictions. Subsequent Urban Forums will take place at GSSI (September 2021) and University of Helsinki (December 2021) with limited physical participation where possible in addition to online participation. We will host a colloquium in Biella, Italy in the summer of 2022.
