Description

Lifelong Learning Dundee presents a special event for Dundee Women's Festival:

The Mistresses of Art by Dr Laura Leuzzi

Room 1G10, Dalhousie Building, University of Dundee

For centuries women were prevented access to artistic professions, means and education. As a result, many were denied a career and a ‘voice’ in the arts. This lecture will give an overview of the cultural contexts and focus on the lives and the work of some notable women who managed to overcome these difficulties and fought societal biases to become artists. Examples from the Renaissance to the end of the XIX century will include: Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625), Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1656), Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757) and Camille Claudel (1864-1943). Presented by Dr Laura Leuzzi.
