Event description
Step into 2020 with a new you by taking up a new hobby of Nordic walking!

About this Event

At the start of each New Year, many of us vow to become better versions of ourselves, with improved fitness levels often being top of the list. Some of us join a gym, others embark on a slimming campaign. But why not up the ante on the benefits of exercise by Nordic walking around our new nature reserve Brandon Reach that sits in the centre of the Dunsmore Living Landscape scheme area? Along with the natural beauty of the outdoors, studies have shown that when you exercise outdoors, you burn more calories than in the controlled environment of a gym. What we seldom realise though, is that exercising outdoors is also more beneficial for our mental health; stress levels and mental fatigue reduce, whilst our creativity and productivity increase.

However, apart from being a sociable way to get fit in the great outdoors, what makes Nordic walking different? With the use of specially designed poles (not trekking poles!), it is an enhanced walking technique similar in body action to cross country skiing. Nordic walking works your upper body as well as your legs, meaning you can burn up to 46% more calories than when you walk ordinarily. Plus, there is less strain on the joints. It is also an effective form of exercise for anyone recovering from injury or illness. Whatever your age or fitness level, Nordic walking is the perfect way to get fit, tone up and build new friendships.

The sessions are a three part series run by Hazel Jones, a professional instructor who's trained through British Nordic Walking. Walking poles will be provided. The walk will last roughly an hour around Brandon Reach (10am - 11am) where afterwards attendees are most welcome to stay and have a drink and natter at Brandon Marsh's Badgers tea room.

Please note: we would like attendees to commit to all the three sessions (7th, 14th and 21st March) as each session builds on the previous one. They all start at 10am, meeting outside Brandon Marsh visitor centre.

Thanks to our funder, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this course is heavily subsidised to £15 per person (£5 per session!).
