Come join us for the Tortworth Geology Walk at Saint Leonard's Church, Tortworth on October 4, 2025 at 10:00 AM (Europe/London). Get ready to explore the fascinating geology of the area while enjoying a leisurely stroll with fellow nature enthusiasts. Find out how this subtle and intimate landscape is related to and been shaped by its underlying geology
Start at 10am.Morning: 2.8km walk across Old Red Sandstone and Carboniferous Limestone countryLunch: at The Lounge at Leyhill. Afternoon: 5km circular walk down the Upper Palaeozoic escarpment, across the Silurian rocks of the Tortworth inlier. Finish at approximately 4.30pm
A wide range of rock types, including two lava flows. desert river sediments and fossil bearing tropical shallow sea sediments from both south of, and on the Equator.A close correspondence between rock types, landscape, building materials and land use
This is not a walk for those who just want to walk: there will be frequent stops to examine geological materials, view and assess the landscape in relation to those materials, their structure, and the processes that shaped them. Hence the long day to cover a relatively short distance. Walking is relatively easy, mainly along footpaths, with only short climbs and descents of less than 40metres
