Join us at Market Place, Dursley, GL11 4BN on October 5, 2025 at 8:15 AM (Europe/London) for a day of adventure and exploration.
Get ready to immerse yourself in nature and discover the beauty of the Lantern Way. This event is perfect for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to connect with fellow hikers and enjoy the picturesque landscapes along the way. Lace up your boots, pack your water bottle, and let's hit the trails together!
According to the Rev Kilvert's diary of 1873, couples on their way to evening services in winter followed a practical though unusual local tradition: "My Mother says that at Dursley, when ladies and gentlemen went out together on dark nights, the gentlemen pulled out the tails of their shirts and walked before to show the way. These were called Dursley lanterns."
The Lantern Way is a fabulous circular route through Dursley, Cam, Coaley and Uley. Today we will be following the clockwise route.
We will skirt the bottom of Stinchcombe Hill, past St George's Church and out through Cam Meadows on to the village of Coaley. We then pass through the hamlets of Hamshill & Ham before joining the Cotswold Way up on to Uley Bury. Continuing along the pretty Uley valley and the woods below Whiteway, up into Ashen Plains and a Sculpture Trail in the woods. Passing Breakheart Quarry and dropping back into Dursley hopefully in time for tea & cake at the Methodist Church.
This is a fairly strenuous walk with a number of steep ascents/descents & stiles to negotiate. You will need to bring refreshments for the day.
