Background
RESOL STRING QUARTET:
Formed in 2018 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Resol String Quartet, named after the Catalan word for 'reflection of sunlight,' comprises members from diverse backgrounds. Awarded First Prize and Audience Prize at the CAVATINA Competition in May 2021 in the Wigmore Hall, the RSQ are one of Scotland’s premiere chamber ensembles. Highlights include their Perth Concert Hall debut, recognition as Chamber Music Scotland’s 'Ones to Watch,' and appearances on BBC Radio Scotland's 'Classics Unwrapped.' In 2022, they made their Conway Hall Debut and performed for BBC Scotland's 'Scotland's People 2022' alongside Tom Walker. In 2023, they covered for the Fitzwilliam Quartet at York Late Music and became Britten Pears Young Artists with a residency in Aldeburgh. Education is an important aspect of the RSQ’s work, with the last year seeing them deliver workshops and masterclasses in over a dozen schools across Great Britain. They have been grateful to receive funding grants for their activities from The National Lottery through Creative Scotland and The Hope Scott Trust.
RICHARD SCHOLFIELD:
Richard Scholfield is an award-winning Scottish saxophonist praised for his “silken” sound (The Scotsman) and thoughtful programming. He is passionate about chamber music, performing regularly in his Tunnell Trust award-winning duo with pianist Iain Clarke (Scholfield-Clarke Duo), as well as in other diverse and wide-ranging projects. Richard is a prolific arranger and transcriber - delighting in the process of re-interpreting and experimenting with historical works through the lens of his distinctly modern instrument, and has created original arrangements for a huge variety of chamber ensembles. Recently, he was commissioned to create an orchestral arrangement of William Grant Still's Romance, to be performed by Metropolitan Opera principal bass trombonist Denson Paul Pollard in concerto appearances in the 2023/2024 season. After winning first prize in the 2023 Croydon Concerto Competition,he performed extensively with various orchestras throughout the 2023/24 concert season – playing Darrell Davison’s new saxophone concerto The Garden of Earthly Delights in Croydon, Epsom, Sevenoaks and Cambridge. Alongside solo and chamber performances, Richard can be seen frequently in concert with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the orchestra of Scottish Opera. He gained a Master of Arts degree in saxophone performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2019 under Josef Pacewicz and visiting professor Arno Bornkamp.
