Event description
Dvorak's 'Romantic Pieces' in the original version for 2 violins and viola, alongside Rachmaninoff's monumental Piano Trio Élégiaque No.2.

About this event

Dvorak's 'Romantic Pieces' are perhaps more known as a work for violin and piano, which is how they were first published. The first sketch by the composer though was for two violins and viola, entitled 'Miniatures' and published later.

Rachmaninoff was very much affected by the death of Tchaikovsky and began his second piano trio as a tribute to him on the evening of the older composer's death. Inscribed 'To the memory of a great artist', the influence of Tchaikovsky's own trio (itself in memory of Nikolai Rubinstein) is very clear, but Rachmaninoff draws his own epic canvass, filled with all those things we love about his music.
