About this event

Make a colourful shibori scarf.

In this class you will learn the art of Kikko folding a silk scarf to create a parcel for dyeing. You will then use a selection of colourful silk dyes to inject into the scarf to create kaleidoscopic patterns and then steam your scarf to fix the colours.

Your tutor will talk to you about Itajime and show you examples of his own work and talk about his trips to Japan in search of vintage silks.

The class will last 2.5 hours, including half an hour for dyeing your scarf.

A 180cm long silk scarf is included in the price.

Organiser of Dye a shibori silk scarf

Rob Jones worked for many years in luxury retailers Harvey Nichols and Anthropologie before deciding to follow his passion for Japanese textiles and become a full-time design/maker in 2015.   Rob has been practising Shibori since 2011, attending a number of short courses at West Dean College, Chichester.  In 2014, he visited Japan to learn traditional methods from indigo guru Bryan Whitehead at his workshop in Fujino, near Tokyo.   Rob uses both ancient and modern Shibori stitched, bound and clamped resist techniques to create a range of lampshades, throws, quilts, scarves and handkerchiefs working with indigo and natural dyes in a range of colours.
