Description

Join the Edinburgh Architectural Association and the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers for this informative evening discussing responsibilities and considerations for architects and engineers when considering fire safety and the CDM regulations.

Fire Engineer Hugh McNamara will first explore recent significant events within the UK which have forced the construction industry to reassess its approach to fire safety, Hugh will present the impact these events have had on current fire safety standards in Scotland both today and likely repercussions in the immediate future.

Felix Wiesner will then attempt to demystify the fire safety of tall timber buildings. He will shed light on common misconceptions regarding fire safety of structural timber and cover some of the most common claims and myths of fires in tall timber buildings.

Lastly, Surveyor and Principal Designer, Ross D Buchan will follow with guidance on how designers should approach their duties under the CDM Regulations 2015, both throughout the design process and continuing with on-site considerations. Ross will discuss how the Architect can effectively carry out their legal obligations within the new format of construction design management.

Hugh McNamara is leader of the Arup fire team in Scotland, having worked on projects such as Royal Museum, Quartermile, UoE Centre for Regenerative Medicine, and Scottish National Gallery, and across various sectors healthcare, commercial, sports/stadia, and education.

Felix Wiesner is a doctoral student for the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned his Master of Engineering in Structural and Fire Safety Engineering in 2015 and was awarded the Ove Arup Foundation Prize in Fire Safety Engineering. He has extensive experience in the experimental investigation of fire safety for timber elements. For his studies on the structural capacity of cross-laminated timber in fire he has collaborated with researchers in Australia, Japan, Canada, USA and mainland Europe. He is a member of the tall timber working group of the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and is a member on the scientific committee for Wood & Fire Safety 2020.

Ross D Buchan has 45 years of experience in the construction industry, his various roles have included Principal of his own company, director of a development company and private housing company. He now works as a consultant fulfilling the Principal Designer role for various practices.
