The speaker

Lorenzo Casasanta holds a Ms.C (2006) and PhD (2010) in telecommunication engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. During his studies, he focused on signal processing and inverse problems in applied geophysics for hydrocarbon exploration. He was a visiting researcher at CWP where he collaborated with Ilya Tsvankin on anisotropic imaging and velocity model building. He joined CGG in 2011 where he worked in several research roles across multiple centres and primarily investigated high-end imaging and inversion algorithms. This first experience with simultaneous source came after he joined Shearwater in mid-2017 as a research advisor, working on imaging and signal processing applications. As an active member of SEG, EAGE and PESGB he has presented papers and published on a variety of topics within seismic data processing with an emphasis on converted-wave and least-squares imaging.


The abstract

In recent years several new source configurations and techniques have been developed for use in the towed-streamer acquisition, including blended and overlapping acquisition with three or more sources. These new designs have been driven by the need for lower costs, higher resolution and improved operational efficiency. Conventionally, the separation of blended sources exploits the natural or artificial randomness in source firing times. Seismic data apparition relies instead on periodic codes which act as modulation functions and facilitate the isolation of the blended sources. With seismic data apparition, sources can be activated almost simultaneously, therefore, allowing for increased fold and better sampling with respect to conventional blended surveys. Moreover, when sources are towed close together, the nature of apparition data is such that simultaneously activated sources can be of small volume and still ensure good penetration and low-frequency content. First in the industry, in September 2017 Shearwater acquired a triple-source seismic data apparition towed-streamer test line. Processing and analysis of these test data show encouraging results. The good agreement between conventional data without blending and apparition data supports the conclusion that apparition is suitable for structural imaging. Further, AVO and repeatability analysis suggest that apparition may also be compatible with reservoir characterization and time-lapse monitoring.
