Description

The speaker

Craig Hunter has been the editor of IHS Markit’s SeismicBase for the last ten years, joining the company after working in news journalism, most recently as an editor in a regional newspaper group. Craig has travelled extensively in his current role, giving presentations on market trends and being interviewed for trade and business press. He has cultivated worldwide industry contacts which he uses to maintain SeismicBase with the assistance of reporters in Aberdeen and Singapore. In addition to editing the database, Craig also writes about the seismic market for company and external publications.

The abstract

The Marine Seismic sector has seen considerable upheaval over the past few years, with the reduction in exploration spending leading to the halving of the active fleet. Following refinancing, restructuring and bankruptcy proceedings, some light is showing at the end of the tunnel with backlogs and rates showing signs of improvement.

This journey has transformed the sector, however, with major players selling their fleets to go asset-light and vessels changing roles to accommodate new demand. There are now more source vessels active than 2D, for example, as the increase in Ocean Bottom Node projects has the industry scrambling to grab a slice. The more time-intensive acquisition involved in this and 4D surveys also has the potential to assist with utilisation. Nevertheless, with so many cold-stacked vessels ready to rejoin the market, what will the impact be on day rates?

This presentation will take a closer look at the current situation and the outlook for the industry, taking in technological advances, day rates, changes to the fleet and operators, and global demand – both in terms of geographical focus and survey type.
