LESP is offering places on this dynamic 6-month programme to support the leadership of EAL.

The programme includes leadership training, school audits and toolkits, a city-wide network of support plus mentoring in-school to help implement effective practice. The programme and resources have been designed by Tamara Rolfs, from Derby who has extensive experience of supporting new arrivals and leading a similar programme with other schools. Programme themes include:

  • EAL Leadership
  • Assessment and data analysis
  • Induction of new to English learners
  • Teaching and learning
  • Influencing change
  • Parental engagement
  • School environment
  • Partnerships beyond the classroom
  • Learning from research
  • Accelearating progress for all EAL learners

Schools can opt for a second member of staff who has experience of EAL teaching (e.g., EAL teacher/ TA or Literacy Leader) to join this programme alongside the EAL Champion for many of the events.

What schools will get from participating in the programme

Schools will receive support and expertise to help them develop practice with new to English pupils and families. They will receive tried and tested high quality resources and on-going mentoring support. The designated leader from your school will be supported through the programme to establish effective practice and procedures that should make a significant difference for your pupils. Each participating school will identify a discrete area of work they seek to develop (project) and this will be supported through the programme. The final event will include a ‘market place’ where all participating schools will share the work they have developed through the programme.

What schools are required to commit to participate in the programme

This is a funded training and support programme (funded by LESP) but it is really important that participating schools take their engagement seriously and only get involved if they will fully commit to:

  • Release an identified leader (an EAL Champion) to attend all events within the programme
  • Give their leader the necessary support to undertake school-based activity and improvement work
  • Engage well with the opportunities in the programme for school-based mentoring support
  • Network with other schools and share outcomes at the final market place event
  • Submitting data at the end of the project to measure impact

Events for EAL Champions

  • Wednesday 31st October*, All day (9.00am—3.30pm) (EAL Champions Training)
  • Wednesday 16th January*, 1.00pm—4.00pm (Collaborative Development Meeting)
  • Wednesday 1st May*, 1.30pm—3.30pm (Marketplace)
  • Plus two in-school mentoring visits at agreed dates and times (Nov & Feb/Mar)
