This is the third in a series of webinars focusing on the experiences of learners who arrive late to the UK education system. In previous webinars, panellists explored the findings of REUK’s research “Education for late arrivals” and considered the challenges facing young people and their families.

In this webinar, we will introduce our new guidance which follows on from the findings of REUK and how it can be used.

The guidance is aimed at secondary schools that welcome and work with learners using EAL who arrive between Years 9 and 11. It recognises the lack of direction offered around this vulnerable group and offers suggestions based on good practice in schools and extensive feedback from practitioners and learners.

Some of the professionals involved in shaping the guidance will also speak about their experiences in working with this group of learners.

Areas of focus will include:

How the guidance is organised;

Its relevance to different staff members, including senior leaders, EAL leads and classroom practitioners;

Case studies around good practice in supporting late arriving learners.

Who should register for the webinar?

School leaders, including those with pastoral responsibility;

EAL Coordinators, or those responsible for EAL in their school;

Year leaders;

Staff with responsibility for admissions and induction of new students;

Those in local authorities responsible for supporting families to find school places.

Biographies: 

Sarah Moodie joined The Bell Foundation as a trainer in 2021. She has 30+ years of experience in a range of settings including language schools, secondary schools, local education authorities and a UK university. She has been a mainstream English/drama teacher. Sarah has an MA in Applied Linguistics, an ESOL focused PGCE (secondary) and 2 postgraduate diplomas. Her work with The Bell Foundation focuses on working with scaling partners and writing guidance and best practice articles.  She lead on the work on the guidance for late arrivals.
