Event description

Description

Details: This is a chance to see photographic history; A rare collection of early slides taken by Thomas Usborne, some in colour. Photography at the time would have been a very expensive hobby and the pictures taken by Thomas are of his family, some buildings in Writtle, the local barracks and finally his Grand Tour of Europe.

The colour photographic slides would have been produced by the use of the “Autochrome process”, each slide taking around 12 hours to complete. The method was first developed in France before 1907 by the Lumiere brothers. The Thomas Usborne collection is believed to be the first example of this process being used by an Englishman.
