Event description
The Early Dance Festival is a community focused annual dance festival for amateurs and professionals from across the UK and Europe.

About this event

This year, due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation, the Festival takes a virtual format. We have collected some of the best examples over the 37 years of the Festival as well as specially prepared performances for this year to celebrate our dance heritage for the 38th year.

Lieven Baert, a renowned dancing master from Belgium, will open the Festival sharing his experience of staging dances not intended for the stage based on his recent production "The English Dancing Master". The theme is well suited for this year's 370th anniversary of Playford’s “The English Dancing Master” published in 1651!

Saturday and Sunday will be filled with performances from the early dance groups from the UK and around the world recorded in the past. You'll also get the chance to join Dance for All session led by Caroline Muraldo, introducing the audience to the historical Creole dance "Belaire."

Saturday evening will start with a prerecorded interview from Ellis and Chris Rogers, the leaders of the Quadrille Club.

The Sunday session will feature projects and performances realised during the COVID time. We will finish our dance tour around the world in Australia with a lecture by Dr Heather Clarke “Dancing on the Decks: a History of Dance at Sea.”

Further information and the Festival programme can be found at https://www.earlydancecircle.co.uk/

Why attend?

• Almost 20 performances from early dance groups across the UK and Europe.

• Speakers including Lieven Baert (Historical Dance and Theatre Practice Ghent, Belgium), Dr Heather Clark ( a dance historian from Brisbane, Australia), Chris and Ellis Rogers (leaders of the Quadrille Club, UK), Ilona Izola (Curator of Bauska Castle Museum, Latvia)

The Early Dance Circle (EDC) is a UK charity that aims to promote the enjoyment, performance and study of historical dance in the UK and beyond. Formed in 1984 as an umbrella organisation, it counts individuals and groups, both amateur and professional, among its members. We believe that knowledge of earlier forms of dance helps enrich the cultural life of the UK, by accessing a heritage of international importance that belongs to us all. We work to get dancers up on the dance floor of history.
