Following on from the success of the Talk Boost KS1 intervention for 4-7 year olds, ICAN has launched Early Talk Boost. Early Talk Boost has been developed by I CAN specialists and piloted in three areas then evaluated using a randomly assigned waiting list control research design. The recently published evaluation has measured the impact on early language skills and is available to view here.
What is Early Talk Boost?
Early Talk Boost is a targeted intervention aimed at 3-4 year old children with delayed language development helping to boost their language skills to help narrow the gap between them and their peers.
The ICAN Evaluation Report shows that after Early Talk Boost, children make statistically significant progress in their early language. On average they make 6 months progress after a nine week intervention, helping them to catch up with other children their age. This is twice the amount of progress of children not having the intervention.
From January until the end of June 2016, 511 children have had pre and post scores entered onto the ICAN system. The following results have emerged:
- 98% had improved total scores after ETB
- 82% had improved ‘Attention and Listening’ scores after ETB
- 95% had improved ‘Communication: Understanding of language’ scores after ETB
- 94% had improved ‘Communication: Speaking’ scores after ETB
- 90% had improved ‘Personal, Social and Emotional skills’ scores after ETB
Who is the Early Talk Boost intervention aimed at?
The Early Talk Boost intervention is designed for children aged 3-4 with language delay, typically those who have:
- Difficulty listening/paying attention
- Poor vocabulary
- Difficulty understanding language
- Difficulty organising and using language
- Immature sentences
- Difficulty explaining or describing
- Difficulty taking turns
This means children who have intact language learning ability in themselves but, for some reason, haven’t had the opportunity to develop age-appropriate language skills.
How is the group intervention delivered?
The intervention is delivered 3 times per week during circle/story time by a trained early years practitioner to a group of up to 8 children over a 9 week period. The intervention is supported by an initial training package and includes an Early Talk Boost Tracker to help identify appropriate children for the intervention and to measure their progress. The intervention also includes a workshop for parents/carers to enable them to develop children’s communication and language skills at home.

The training will give participants the skills and knowledge to understand the rationale behind Early Talk Boost, identify appropriate children, measure their progress and deliver the intervention successfully.

How does Early Talk Boost support Ofsted?
Ofsted identify that the most successful settings have a focus on developing skilled staff. Early Talk Boost can be provided using Early Years Pupil Premium to create a skilled workforce and knowledgeable parents - factors which are known to be essential in supporting communication development during a child’s early years.
How much does Early Talk Boost cost?
The training session costs £120.00 per person, plus an additional £450.00 for an Early Talk Boost Intervention Pack (Intervention Manual, Parent Training, Tracker Tool, Toolkit and 10 x 8 Jake and Tizzy story books.
