Programme Outline:

This course will explore the ‘big ideas’ in early mathematics that ensure children have a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding in number and pattern. We will explore how these ‘big ideas’ can be incorporated into classroom practice. Delegates will consider practical approaches to help children develop and secure number sense and mathematical thinking skills. The course will consider the Characteristics of Effective Learning alongside the Principles of Mastery.

By the end of the course, delegates will:

• have an understanding of how children learn mathematics and relate this to how a mastery approach might look in their setting

• have explored a range of pedagogical approaches to teaching early mathematics

• will have experienced a range of practical activities to use in their settings
