Event description

Description

Falkland Stewardship Trust is delighted to announce that we have new archaeological dig dates to offer in 2019. Dr Oliver O’Grady will be the Lead Archaeologist for the project and is looking forward to renewing his acquaintance with East Lomond. If you enjoyed being part of our digs in 2014 and 2017 here’s another chance to use your excavation and recording skills. If you have never done this before and want to experience good local archaeology, then please sign up!

We will be working across the southern shoulder of the East Lomond Hill, so potential participants should have a reasonable level of fitness. Following the results of geophysical scanning in Autumn 2017 we have selected a number of test pit locations across the moorland to excavate.

Important information

  • No prior experience is necessary as basic training will be given. Enthusiasm and commitment essential.
  • You will be working outdoors, possibly in inclement weather so you will need to wear warm, waterproof clothing.
  • Walking conditions will be challenging over rough moorland so please bring sturdy footwear.
  • Bring a packed lunch and plenty of drinking water each day.
  • Digs are open to anyone aged 16+. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Location: Lomond Hills Regional Park. This is signposted off the A912 a couple of minutes east of Falkland village. National Grid Reference: NO 25205 05820. Participants will meet each day at the car park beside the masts and walk to the dig site together.

There will be 6 dig periods in total. Each dig is booked separately. At this stage we are asking participants to sign up for one dig only so that we can allow as many people as possible to enjoy an archaeological experience. We will review this arrangement closer to the dig dates.

  • Wednesday 15th to Friday 17th May
  • Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May
  • Wednesday 22th to Friday 24th May
  • Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May
  • Wednesday 29th May to Friday 31st May
  • Saturday 1st June and Sunday 2nd June

There is no cost to being part of this archaeological programme as funding has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Fife Council. However, in order to advance our archaeological programme, Falkland Stewardship Trust - which is a registered charity - welcomes donations from participants towards its on-going activity. Please also consider joining our membership scheme; members of our Friends of Falkland scheme are normally the first to hear of these opportunities. Details of this and how to make a donation can be found here.
