Eligibility for a funded training place

For many years East Sussex has had a high rate of deaths by suicide. This is an issue that is particularly relevant for men, with three quarters of completed suicides by men, and suicide now the single biggest cause of death in men under 45 in the UK. Thanks to funding from the Public Health team at East Sussex County Council we are able to offer fully-funded two-day ASIST training to individuals and organisations working with men in East Sussex.

To be eligible for a funded place you must be working or volunteering with men in East Sussex. We appreciate that this a broad category – to help define this further we have provided a list of potential roles or areas of work on the booking form.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions around eligibility for the training:

Course Content

During the workshop you will have an opportunity to explore any personal or professional experiences with suicide. You will also have space to examine your own attitudes about suicide and people who are at risk of suicide. Space is allowed to focus on how your experiences with suicide impact on your beliefs and attitudes about using suicide first aid.

You will also have an opportunity to better understand the needs of a person at risk of suicide and how to use suicide first aid to meet those needs. Some of the learning will take place in the whole group of participants and some in smaller workgroups. You will learn and practice a model of suicide intervention.
Your workshop trainers will be available to offer support and will work hard to create a learning atmosphere where participants can also encourage and support each other and have some fun.

The workshop can be tiring and it is important you try to leave the evenings free to relax. Participants from previous courses have suggested that we let future participants know how tiring the course can be, so please do plan some time for you before and after the course.

Getting to the Venue

Please see the venue's website for location details here.

Timings & Breaks

The course runs from 9am to 5pm on both days. It is essential that you attend both days for the full duration. Please arrive promptly in the morning – we promise to finish on time! We will have an hour lunch break on both days and we try to have two short breaks each morning and afternoon.

Tea and coffee with be provided during break times. Lunch will not be provided, so you are advised to bring your own lunch, or use the centre's cafe bar. Menu here.

If you have been allocated an East Sussex County Council funded place it is our policy to charge a fee (currently £50 for ASIST) for non-attendance with less than one week’s notice. This is because there are certain costs that we incur in organising the course and these are non-refundable at short notice. We have introduced this policy because if we are unable to demonstrate good attendance to our funders it will be more difficult to secure future funding for these courses.

Whole Courses & Bespoke Training

Whole Courses are a cost-effective way of training a whole team of staff or volunteers. Bespoke Training Courses can be developed and delivered by arrangement. We can design training to suit different settings; e.g. acute, residential, educational, corporate and community; different client groups and organisation with specific needs. Please contact us to discuss your exact training needs.

Grassroots Suicide Prevention

Grassroots Suicide Prevention delivers training that saves lives. Very few, if any of us, are untouched by suicide. We believe that suicide is a community health problem and that suicide can be prevented.

We promote and deliver ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), a 2 day workshop that teaches a model of suicide first aid.

We offer a range of training programmes to complement ASIST, including SafeTALK (Suicide Alertness), One in Four (Mental Health Awareness) and Self Injury (Understanding & Working with Self Injury).

We are very happy to deliver courses in-house to your organisation; please ring or e-mail us to find out more.
