About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

This interactive workshop will focus on developing knowledge and skills to work positively with social work learners who encounter challenges. It will consist of a mixture of presentation and group work and will consider developing emotional resilience, power and the importance of courageous conversations.

This workshop is suitable for all practitioners involved in enabling and assessing social work learners such as experienced Practice Educators in need of a refresher/update on current practice, newly qualified PEs and PEPS trainees, Onsite Supervisors.

Please note that the majority of the content will be relevant for ASYE assessors and Mentors/OSS of apprentices, however, assessment frameworks, such as PCF levels will focus on student levels and not ASYE level. The workshop will not address social work (integrated degree) apprenticeship standards as Kingston University provides separate workshops for apprenticeship mentors and OSS of apprentices.

Learning outcomes:

  • Refresh your knowledge of expected standards
  • Identify signs and behaviours that indicate a social work learner might be struggling
  • Reflect on potential challenges for Practice Educators and how they might impact on your assessment
  • Understand the importance of having courageous conversations with students/learners.
  • Reflect on power dynamics and their impact
  • Consider models and tools to use with struggling learners
