Course Overview

This immersive 5-week, in-person course offers a deep dive into the rich tradition and history of Ebru, the ancient Turkish art of paper marbling. Guided by expert instructor Dilara Karaağaç, students will explore the techniques, materials, and patterns that define this mesmerizing art form.

Through hands-on practice and expert demonstrations, participants will learn how to prepare and manipulate traditional Ebru materials, including natural pigments, ox-gall, and thickened water made from Gum Tragacanth or seaweed. Students will master the use of handmade rosewood and horsehair brushes to apply colors onto water, creating intricate floating designs that are then carefully transferred onto paper. The process involves reshaping and refining patterns with tools like pins, needles, and combs, resulting in stunning, one-of-a-kind marbled artworks.

By the end of the course, students will have developed a strong foundation in Ebru techniques, enabling them to practice independently and incorporate this centuries-old art form into their own creative journey.

The course will be taught according to the traditional training and the educational model used in Istanbul, which has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years.
