About this event
Sandra Jasper and Jonathan Prior will discuss their research on animal sound archives. These international archives arose in the mid twentieth century, primarily as repositories of recordings for bioacoustics research, the study of animal sounds, and as reference libraries for the identification of species by scientific taxonomists and wildlife enthusiasts. Focusing on The British Library’s Wildlife and Environmental Sound Collection and The Berlin Natural History Museum’s Animal Sound Archive, this Echolocation Session will be richly illustrated by archival recordings, will reflect on the geopolitics, aesthetics, and animal lives encountered within animal sound archives.
The listening session will be followed by a sonic conversation led by Anton Spice.
Dr Sandra Jasper is Professor of Geography and holds the Chair in Cultural Geography and Society-Environment Research at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Her research interests are in cultural, urban, and environmental geography with a particular focus on urban nature and biodiversity, wastelands and infrastructures, sonic geographies, and feminist theory.
Dr Jonathan Prior is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Cardiff University. His research spans cultural geography, environmental philosophy, sound studies, and landscape research. He has published work on the geographies of sound and sonic perception; environmental aesthetics; and ecological restoration and rewilding strategies.
Anton Spice is a writer and senior editor with over ten years experience in publishing, commissioning and creative strategy across music, art and culture. He has written The Guardian, Frieze, Wax Poetics, Electronic Sound, Composer, Bandcamp, Sonic Acts, Atlas Obscura, Disco Pogo, WeJazz, Caught By The River and The Vinyl Factory. Anton runs a Substack newsletter called Through Sounds, featuring interviews and research about listening and climate change.
Please note that ticket sales revenue will be donated to Hackney Night Shelter.
