What bounty of colour can we glean from the gardens, hedgerows, and woods in August? Join Artist Catherine West for a session introducing her processes and principles of natural dyeing. We will use a combination of flower pounding and steamed bundle techniques to begin the natural dye journey in this session. Participants will also be introduced to the essential practice of mordanting - by beginning the mordanting of materials to replace those used.
Given the school holidays, this session is designed to be family friendly. All children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and are the responsibility of their adult. Families will receive an extended learning pack from our Arts Award programme, which includes signposting for thematically related activities around the region. Families should book the family ticket and fabric bundle.
Fabrics for this activity are not included due to labour and cost associated with sourcing, scouring and mordanting. Participants are welcome to bring their own fabric, but should ensure it is mordanted, dry and ready for use. Alternately, please purchase a fabric bundle(s) in addition to the event ticket cost.
