About this event

Tutor: Laurie Jackson

The image of the sleeping Dormouse is well known amongst nature lovers. But there is so much more to this rare but endearing mammal.

This course will provide an introduction to the iconic Hazel Dormouse, covering its ecology, distribution and habitat preferences, along with survey and monitoring techniques.

The day will begin in the classroom, before heading out for a field session in the stunning Wadhurst Park, to apply some of the survey techniques discussed.

No previous knowledge is required - the course is suitable for those with a general interest and those who wish to become more involved with Hazel Dormouse survey and monitoring.

Laurie is an experienced ecologist, wildlife guide, writer and natural history trainer based in southern England. She has recently produced a fantastic Guide to Wildlife Surveying which is available to download from our website here.

Wadhurst Park's 850 hectares is managed to protect its nature, wildlife, cultural heritage and beauty. It is made up of woodlands, meadows, lakes and orchards and is a wonderful example of sustainable environmental management in the High Weald.

What to bring: Appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear, adequate sun protection and wet weather gear, packed lunch and drink. Refreshments will be provided.

Facilities: Toilets are available near the training room.

Parking: Free parking is available. Please be aware that there is a short uphill walk from the car park.

Public Transport: Nearest train station is Stonegate (5 miles)

Accessibility: Participants should be able to walk several kilometres and terrain may be uneven in places.
