Event description

Description

What could economic justice mean for Scotland?

The UK economy is not working for people in Scotland and across the UK as a whole. It is no longer delivering rising living standards for a majority of the population. Too many people are in insecure jobs; young people are set to be poorer than their parents; many parts of the UK are being left behind as the nations and regions diverge further.

The IPPR Commission on Economic Justice was established in 2016 in the wake of the vote to leave the EU to examine the challenges facing the UK economy and to make recommendations for reform. Its final report Prosperity and Justice: A Plan for the New Economy, published in September 2018, made the case for a radical overhaul of our economy.

IPPR Scotland is now delighted to invite you to join us for an event exploring paths to economic justice in Scotland. Nicola Sturgeon MSP, First Minister of Scotland, will open the event outlining her vision for the economy in Scotland, before a panel representing civil society, trade unions and business discuss key questions on fairness and prosperity in the Scottish economy.

This event is open to all and will take place on Wednesday 22 January, 2.30-5.00pm at The National Museum of Scotland, Chambers St, Edinburgh EH1 1JF. The event will open with refreshments at 2.30pm, with speeches beginning at 3.00pm.

Confirmed speakers include:

Nicola Sturgeon MSP, First Minister of Scotland

Russell Gunson, Director, IPPR Scotland

Mary Senior, Scotland Official, University and College Union, Member of the Commission on Economic Justice

Carys Roberts, Chief Economist and Head of the Centre for Economic Justice, IPPR

Talat Yaqoob, Director, Equate Scotland
