Event description

Description

What could economic justice mean for the South West?

The UK economy is not working. It is no longer delivering rising standards for a majority of the population. Too many people are in insecure jobs; young people are set to be poorer than their parents; the nations and regions of the UK are diverging further.

The IPPR Commission on Economic Justice was established in 2016 in the wake of the vote to leave the EU to examine the challenges facing the UK economy and to make recommendations for reform. Its final report Prosperity and Justice: A Plan for the New Economy, published in September 2018, made the case for a radical overhaul of our economy.

IPPR is now delighted to invite you to join us for an event involving people from across the South West. Cllr Phil Bialyk and Molly Scott Cato MEP will be joined by a panel representing civil society, businesses and trade unions in the region to respond to audience questions and contributions about your experience of fairness and prosperity in the local economy.

This event is open to all and will take place on Thursday 21st November, 17.30-20.30 at Exeter Corn Exchange, Market St, Exeter EX1 1BW. The event will open with refreshments at 17.30, with speeches beginning at 18.00. Drinks will be served from 19.30-20.30.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Molly Scott Cato, MEP for the South West of England and Gibraltar
  • Cllr Phil Bialyk, Leader of Exeter City Council
  • Carys Roberts, Chief Economist and Head of the Centre for Economic Justice, IPPR
  • Elaine Cook, CEO, Devon Communities Together
  • Wendy Hart, Founder and Director, Community Nudge Builders
  • Thomas Bourne, Founder of Greenheart Consulting, and Trustee of the Soil Association
