About The Show

Poul Høxbro has been called “the great man of small instruments”. He’s an endlessly fascinating and inspiring musician - a Danish master of ancient flutes and bells, of bones and drums. As soon as we met him, we knew we had to work with him.

While we were building the show, we had a moment when we realised that this combination of instruments has literally never been heard before. The set that we are presenting is all new - terrifyingly, ink-barely-dry new. Ancient music, brought vividly to life for 21st century ears.

Rounding out our artistic team for the project is composer Paul Clark, who will be writing new music for the show. Paul makes his Manchester Collective debut fresh off the back of a hugely successful collaboration with Renee Fleming and Ben Whishaw at The Shed in New York. We’re thrilled to have him along for the ride.

Full disclosure - “Ecstatic Dances” feels scary for us. New work is always frightening, mostly because until you start making it, you never really know what you’re going to end up with. Fortunately, we’re not particularly fond of being comfortable. Come join us on tour. Let’s get risky.

At The Door

As our concerts tend to sell out before the day of the show, we encourage all of our guests to buy tickets in advance. Any unsold tickets will be available for purchase on the door.

Manchester Collective

Manchester Collective is redefining how a new generation of audiences engage with the arts in the UK. Recently described by the Yorkshire Post as a "powerful, moving, & extraordinary" addition to the UK music scene, Manchester Collective produces world-class, innovative, and outward facing musical experiences for new audiences across Britain. Their thrilling live performances, allied with daring programming and a brazen approach to convention, have seen the Collective reach more than 200,000 people across their first two seasons.

In December 2017, Manchester Collective was appointed Ensemble in Residence at The Stoller Hall, a new flagship concert hall for Manchester. In 2018, Manchester Collective has been featured by publications including The Strad Magazine (twice), Bachtrack (“intimate, immersive experiences without parallel”), and Seen and Heard International (“an astonishing evening”). Classic FM and the BBC have also featured the work of the Collective on an ongoing basis, and in March 2018, MC presented a groundbreaking two hour classical broadcast on NTS Radio.

Recent performing highlights include concert debuts at Kings Place in London, a PRSF supported tour of the Collective’s latest major commission, 100 DEMONS, (featuring electronic musician Vessel, cellist and Radiohead collaborator Oliver Coates, and music by Daniel Elms), and a packed performance of Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time” in The Stoller Hall, broadcast live on Facebook to over 10,000 viewers.
