Join the artists featured in Ecstatic Rituals for a creative symposium where they will discuss and expand upon their work. Including research into the long history of Hull fair, the folk traditions that are associated with this part of the world and the more recent history of coastal economies.

 

Schedule

12pm Tom Ireland will give a deeper insight into his research around coastal and seasonal economies, as well as entertainment and politics, reflecting on his work in Ecstatic Rituals that touches on legislation around mass gathering and noise.
 1pm  Lunch break (Please bring your own lunch)
 1:45pm  Collaborative duo Faye Coral Johnson and Mike Redmond (MSR FCJ) will present their practice that spans experimental drawing, publication and painting. Discussing their unique process, the development of their techniques as well as their approach to symbolism and narrative.
 2:30pm  Anna FC Smith and Faye Spencer will each discuss the thinking and research behind their new work produced for Ecstatic Rituals, along with how their previous collaborative practice has fed into their individual research interests around urban folklore and the figure of the fool.
 3:30pm  Afternoon break
 4pm  Medieval Helpdesk (David Steans and Lara Eggleton) will expand on their work in Ecstatic Rituals ‘Public Entertainment I & II’ with live readings of two new texts, exploring the physical and emotional realities of entertaining, and being entertained in public spaces.

Humber Street Gallery has established itself as one of Hull’s most significant contemporary art spaces since opening at the beginning of the UK City of Culture celebrations in 2017.

The Arts Council has committed to continue investment in Hull’s cultural ambitions to help sustain a legacy from UK City of Culture and as a reflection of Humber Street Gallery’s major success in its initial year which saw over 150,000 people attend its exhibitions has been awarded Art Council of England Funding and the National Lottery Project Award for programming in 18/19.

Humber Street Gallery is dedicated to working towards further establishing itself as a major contemporary art space of regional, national and international importance in an effort to further strengthen Hulls flourishing cultural offer and continue bringing high quality visual arts to the city and the rest of the UK.
