Description

The ECU School Chess Teacher Training course is designed to provide teachers with a certificate recognising that they have met the required level of chess knowledge and understanding for teaching chess in schools. The course deploys chess as a vehicle to teach thinking skills such as problem solving and logical analysis. The didactical methods deployed are suitable for pupils from age 8 and older. The Certificate is recognised by chess federations across Europe.

The course comprises two days of hands-on demonstrations, interactive presentations, group discussions and practical exercises. The focus of the course is on the didactical aspects of chess. The course is suitable for teachers and tutors who want to make chess an exciting and educational experience for children. The course is innovative in terms of content and delivery.

The ECU School Chess Teacher Certificate is available to those who complete the course and pass an online test taken at the end of the course. The Certificate is endorsed by the European Chess Union through the Academic Advisory Panel to its Education Commission. The Certificate does not confer the right to teach in schools.

Courses have taken place across Europe in Madrid, London, Budapest, Hamburg, Toledo, Uppsala and Munich. Course graduates are registered online on the ChessPlus website.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Attendees are expected to know the basics of playing chess
  • The online test requires the candidate to bring a digital device

EUROPEAN CHESS UNION

The European Chess Union. is the the representative bodhy for 54 national chess federations in Europe and neighbouring regions. The Education Commission of the ECU promotes chess as a pedagogic tool to develop the social and intellectual skills of children. The Certificated training course was designed by leading European chess educationists and is validated by the ECU Academic Advisory Board which is an academic panel with experts in disciplines from cognitive science and psychology to statistics and education. The Certificate was developed following the Declaration by the European Parliament on 15th March 2012 that Chess in Schools should be encouraged for educational purposes.
