Ed Yong: I Contain Multitudes
The Microbes within Us and a Grander View of Life
Ed Yong is an award-winning science writer. His first book, I Contain Multitudes, is about the partnership between microbes and animals. His writing has also appeared in National Geographic, Nature, New Scientist and more.
Microbes are everywhere. There are more bacteria in your gut than there are stars in our galaxy. These microscopic companions sculpt our organs, protect us from diseases, guide our behaviour, and bombard us with their genes.
They also hold the key to understanding all life on earth.
They live in the water of the deepest oceanic trenches and in the rocks below. They persist in belching hydrothermal vents, boiling springs, and Antarctic ice. They can even be found in clouds, where they act as seeds for rain and snow.
