Edible Insects: avoiding a global food crisis

About this Event

The Global Food and Environment Institute are delighted to invite you to join our April 2021 webinar ‘Edible Insects: building up an appetite for a new kind of grub’.

This will be a 20 minute webinar presented by Dr Alan Hernandez Alvarez, followed by 10 minutes for Q&A.

Dr Hernández-Álvarez is a lecturer in Nutrition and Global Health in the School of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Leeds. He will give a talk on his research into edible insects as a potential key ingredient to avoiding a global food crisis.

He identifies and characterizes the functional properties of food components, notably proteins and phytochemicals from a wide variety of sources such as pulses, cereals, pseudo-cereals, algae, insects, microorganisms, among others.

The seminar will be chaired by Professor Caroline Orfila, University of Leeds.
