Event description
Year-long online coaching course to help Christian leadership teams discern what God is saying while they are planning and making decisions.

About this event

Discerning Together will take groups of leaders on the journey that many of us have taken individually: into prayer, listening to God and learning how to discern what God is saying to us. Only this time we will embark on the journey together. We’ve all been there: whether it’s a deacons’ meeting, church members’ meeting, or trustees’ meeting, we pray at the start, pray at the end, and hope that in all our talking in between God’s will has emerged.

How much does it cost?

Discerning Together is Edifi's first ever course. We are looking for 10-20 churches and organisations that are ready and willing to learn, but also to help us to perfect the course, and fine-tune the technology behind it. As this is a pilot, we are offering places for the massively reduced cost of £100 per team for the whole year's training and facilitation. We are asking all participating teams to give feedback throughout the course to help Edifi improve not only this individual course but our online learning platform in general.

Who is it for?

It is for church and other Christian leadership teams.

How will it work?

Throughout the course of a year (starting in autumn 2020) you will gather as a team as you normally do (probably via Zoom or similar at the moment), except that once a quarter you will give over significant time to learning together.

The course will work particularly well for teams that have a big decision to make that they are willing to take time to talk about. It could be vision, staffing, a change in your policies or theology, or it could be something less dramatic.

You will learn and grow together as a whole team, as we broadcast a webinar to you and your team members in your homes via Zoom. You will be able to connect through social media to other churches and organisations that are undertaking the same transformation of their decision-making processes.

There will be an initial induction video, four webinars, ongoing social media support throughout the year, email and/or video coaching and a final ‘graduation’ event at the end of the year – obviously at the moment we don’t know whether that will be in person or online. There will also be reading or a video to watch a few weeks before each webinar session.

Dates of the webinar sessions are below.

What will we learn?

Topics on the course will include:

  • How to grow your own relationship with God and share it with fellow team members.
  • How to bring together the differing gifts and spiritualities of your team to discern God’s will together.
  • How to listen to God in the midst of disagreement, even conflict.
  • How to continue to keep God at the centre as you move from decision to action.
  • How to incorporate all this learning in your church members’ meetings.

This would be a fantastic opportunity to work through a big decision or project together, moving through the process from initial discernment to implementable plan.

Who will do the training?

The course will be led by experienced trainers in contemplative spirituality, team dynamics, conflict management and leading change. Contributors include:

Roy Searle who is a passionate Northerner and one of the founding leaders, now an Elder, of the Northumbria Community. He is a Free Church Tutor at Cranmer Hall, St John’s College, Durham and an Associate Tutor of Spurgeons College, London. A spiritual director, mentor and writer, and in his consultancy role works as one of the Baptist Union’s Pioneer Ambassadors.

Barbara Macnish loves working with teams and individuals in churches, charities and businesses to help them thrive and fulfil their calling. She is a qualified Mediator, Myers Briggs practitioner and Clifton Strengths Coach and uses experiential learning principles and an interactive approach to facilitate tailored training events both virtually and in person.

Jo Williams is the Director for Reconciliation at the Blackley Centre. She is an experienced mediator of over 20 years in a variety of settings including in churches, with individuals and in communities.

Sandra Cobbin is the lead trainer and coach for Clarity Development. With many years experience as a manager she brings hands-on experience of leadership and management.

When will it start?

The course will start in the autumn of 2020. There will be an introductory video in September or October, and the times and dates of the led sessions are below. The contributors will also give you resources to look at and think about before each session.
