Event description

At the Fresh Air Learning Company we love creating extraordinary experiences for our clients. Deep down is a desire to create opportunities for fresh perspectives and new, life-affirming stories with long legs! This is one such opportunity!

"EDINBURGH 3 PEAKS" is a highly memorable walking and dining experience for a small group of business leaders - as individuals, with guests, with colleagues, as a team, with partners etc. - in and around Edinburgh 25-26 Jan 17. It's a cracker!

Robert Burns' birthday is celebrated around the world on the 25th January; no less so than in Scotland, the country of his birth! And so the idea behind "EDINBURGH 3 PEAKS" is to offer two inspirational walks for business leaders either side of a fabulous Burns Night experience in the Scottish capital Edinburgh.

For those who have signed up for our membership programme - Fresh Air Business Walking - this constitutes a quarterly “out of area” walk.

If you are looking for:

  • A chance to draw energy and inspiration from stunning natural and built environments;

  • An opportunity to share and resolve major work challenges with like-minded business leaders;

  • A creative and engaging alternative to indoor meetings;

  • And, would like to explore Edinburgh and experience a Burns Supper and Scottish ceilidh,

then "EDINBURGH 3 PEAKS" will provide a powerfully memorable opportunity to blend business with pleasure.

Wed 25 Jan 17:

  • On Day 1 we will walk in the Pentland Hills on the southern side of Edinburgh. The 360 views from the 500m tops are simply stunning. The view North-West through North and round to the East has Edinburgh at your feet, the Firth of Forth (and the 3 bridges) in the middle distance, and the Highlands beyond. To the South, the hills roll on towards the Borders. In January these distant mountain and hill tops will be snow covered. The lower lying Pentlands may have a dusting too. Gorgeous! This walk will be around 5 hours long including stops.

  • In the evening we will enjoy a full Scottish Burns Supper & ceilidh in the Ghillie Dubh, Princess Street, Edinburgh. There will be a welcome dram, the Haggis (which on this occasion will form the starter) will be piped in and toasted in verse, other courses follow during which there will be live Scottish folk music, and afterwards one of Scotland’s top ceilidh bands will play for those who want to give it a fling or two! See here for full event details http://ghillie-dhu.co.uk/menu/ghillie-dhu-burns-brochure.pdf

Thu 26 Jan 17:

  • On Day 2 we will walk the "Edinburgh 3 Peaks” (this is our unofficial term!) taking in Castle Mound (and the world famous Castle), Arthurs Seat (a large volcanic hill in the middle of Edinburgh that overlooks Holyrood Palace, the Scottish Parliament, the Royal Mile, and has huge views over the Firth of Forth to the Highlands), and Calton Hill which overlooks the East end of Princess Street, and which also has superb views over the Firth of Forth. We will also call in past various famous Edinburgh landmarks en route. This walk will be around 5 hours long including stops.

For the price of £125 + VAT per person:

  • We will meet clients off flights/trains and cover all local transport requirements during the two days.

  • We will provide two days of facilitation and guided walking (using qualified, experienced, insured leaders) and local Edinburgh advice.

  • We will provide any coaching and/or outdoor skills training that you would like within the group setting.

  • We will provide any outdoor gear (other than boots) that you might need.

  • We will provide a 15% discount arrangement with Cotswold Outdoor for your sole use online or in-store.

  • We will make the group arrangements at the Ghillie Dubh which includes the meal in the Auditorium as described here http://ghillie-dhu.co.uk/menu/ghillie-dhu-burns-brochure.pdf

You will be responsible for:

  • Making your own way to/from Edinburgh, aiming to be ready for “first boot on the hill” by 10:00 on Wed 25 Jan 17. We will advise the start point closer to the date once we know everyone's travel arrangements. For southern travellers, Easyjet prices (for example) are currently around £90 return per person including additional bag. We will be finished on Thu 26 Jan 17 by 15:00 making early evening return flights possible.

  • Booking your own accommodation. For example, Premier Inn Lauriston Place - which we recommend, and which is easily walkable to/from Ghillie Dubh - is currently (at the time of posting) showing rooms at £38.50.

  • Covering food and drink costs, other than the meal at the Ghillie Dubh.

Your leader for this event is Dave Stewart, MD of The Fresh Air Learning Company. Dave is a Chartered Director who has led at senior levels across private, public and not-for-profit sectors. • Throughout we will be walking at a pace which allows people to talk comfortably.

  • Our Day 1 walk in the Pentlands will be around 5 hours in duration, including plenty of stops for group discussion and to admire the views. Total ascent will be around 600m/2000'.

  • Our Day 2 walk around Edinburgh and Arthur's Seat will be around 5 hours in duration, including plenty of stops for group discussion and to admire the views. We will also have the opportunity to stop at cafes and pubs for refreshments/lunch (at personal expense). Total ascent will be around 350m/1200'.

  • If you are in any doubt about your ability to undertake these walks, consult your GP and the organisers.

Burns Supper:

  • The Ghillie Dubh has not set a formal dress code for the Burns Supper. Some of their guests could be in full Highland black tie, and others will be in more relaxed and informal garb. It is personal choice. "Smart casual" with a hint of tartan will work wonderfully.

  • Walking boots or sturdy footwear with good grip, and ideally ankle support. Wellies are not suitable.

  • Waterproof over-trousers and waterproof jacket. Let us know if you need help with these.

  • Spare warm layers for stops and "layering" as required.

  • Warm headgear and waterproof gloves.

  • For Day 1 bring your own snacks/packed lunch and water (1.5 litre minimum). On Day 2 we will have lunch in an Edinburgh cafe or pub (at personal expense).

  • A flask with a hot drink is recommended for Day 1.

  • Personal medication as required.

  • Small rucksack

Note that we are able to provide participants with a 15% discount code for their sole use at Cotswold Outdoor, one of UK's leading outdoor clothing and equipment retailers. We will provide this once you sign up for the walk.

The walks will go ahead in all but the most extreme weather. The route may be modified to make the best of conditions. Your leaders are highly qualified and experienced outdoor leaders. You will be in safe hands.
