ROCK ‘N’ ROLL, RHYTHM & BLUES, BOOGIE WOOGIE PIANO BAND

MIKE SANCHEZ

British singer, pianist and guitarist Mike Sanchez is one of the most exciting and charismatic performers of Rhythm & Blues and Rock 'n' Roll in the world today. His indelible image as a frenetic front man, pumping powerful boogie-woogie from the piano in a soaking suit, has won him fans from all over the world and attracted a following from many famous rock and blues legends who have lined up to work with him.

The June 2014 authorised biography 'Mike Sanchez-Big Town Playboy' by Michael Madden with a foreword by Robert Plant and published by Music Mentor Books is available from Amazon and all good bookstores. Mike has been busy promoting his new book as well as preparing his next new album release Mike Sanchez featuring Albert Lee 'So Many Routes' as a follow up to his critically acclaimed album 'Almost Grown' featuring Imelda May.

Mike spent four years as a full-time member of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, fronting the band alongside Georgie Fame, Beverly Skeete, Albert Lee, Andy Fairweather-Low and Eddie Floyd on their annual world tours. The Rhythm Kings released their album ‘Just for a Thrill’ and a fabulous DVD entitled ‘Let The Good Times Roll’, both featuring Mike’s extensive role as a member of the ex-Rolling Stones bassist’s touring band.

In December 2007 Mike was invited to appear as a guest vocalist with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings at one of the most publicised musical events of the year - the Led Zeppelin reunion at London's O2 Arena, a tribute to the memory of the late Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records. Mike performed alongside such soul legends as Solomon Burke, Ben E King, Percy Sledge and Sam Moore.

Mike is currently involved in a number of touring line-ups, most notably his 6-piece outfit Mike Sanchez and his Band featuring Tom Bull on guitar, bassist Nick Whitfield (both Tom and Nick hail from Leicester's Drugstore Cowboys), Mike's long term drummer Mark Morgan, Nick Lunt on baritone sax (Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) and Martin Winning on tenor sax (Van Morrison). This band's performances continuously receive fabulous reviews throughout the blues and rockin' scenes across the UK and Europe.

A 2009 recording project was Mike's second collaboration with top Swedish bluesmen The Beat From Palookaville, creating the hot rockin' album 'Babes & Buicks' out on Mike’s own Doopin Music. In 2003 Mike released a debut 2-hour DVD titled 'Red Hot …Live!' featuring live shows of his own 4 and 7-piece band and The Mike Sanchez Rhythm & Blues Revue, a Johnny Otis 1950s style show starring doo-wop vocal trio The Extraordinaires and Imelda May who shortly thereafter became a household name.

Mike Sanchez was born Jesus Miguel Sanchez in London's East End to Spanish parents Jesus and Manola on the 17th of February 1964. At the age of eleven, his family moved to Worcestershire in the West Midlands where Mike took up the piano, developing a strong love for 1950s' American roots music through his high school years. As a teenager he taught himself guitar and formed The Rockets, a rockabilly trio.

Shortly after, Mike was introduced to former Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown and Steve Gibbons' multi-instrumentalist Andy Silvester by Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant, which led to the founding of the Big Town Playboys in 1984, specialising in authentic post-war Rhythm & Blues. Procol Harum pianist Gary Brooker became an early fan and introduced Mike to his friends Eric Clapton and Amen Corner's Andy Fairweather-Low. The latter signed up as guitarist with the Big Town Playboys for two years in the 1990s. Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood is another good friend who regularly involves Mike in his plans wherever possible.

Mike recorded a number of albums including the classic Gene Vincent/Cliff Gallup tribute album 'Crazy Legs' with guitar-great Jeff Beck in 1993. The Big Town Playboys had various stints opening for Eric Clapton at London's Royal Albert Hall and appeared at many European music festivals, backing bluesmen like Lowell Fulson, Don & Dewey, Lonnie Brooks, Joe Hughes, Jimmy Nelson, Carey Bell and the great Little Willie Littlefield. Over the years, Mike has also been involved in movie soundtrack producing and recording, most recently for the movie 'I’ll Be There' (2003) starring Charlotte Church and Craig Ferguson. The well-established magazine Blues in Britain voted Mike 'UK Keyboard Player of the Year' for four consecutive years (2000-2004).

Mike's main aim has always been to make every live show his best yet as he continuously enjoys growing acclaim and admiration for his electrifying stage performances from new and old fans of all age groups across the world. He is now a family man living with his wife Sarah and their baby son Louie Ray in the Sierra Gredos near Madrid considering the next significant step in his colourful career.

THE PRETTY THINGS

After more than 45 years of continuous service, The Pretty Things remain a significant, challenging force in rock and roll. Despite their veteran status, their contemporary relevance, undiminished energy & inspirational commitment inspire emerging generations of new artists and young fans, whilst retaining their devoted, fanatical, core fan base.
Their career is a tribute to righteous, unswerving convictions, always chosen over a quick buck. It is no surprise that guitarist Dick Taylor chose to leave The Rolling Stones, which he had formed with Mick & Keith, to pursue a more raw level of energy with The Pretty Things. And they still retain that energy, as befits one of this country’s most exciting live acts, whilst their recordings and song-writing maintain the same levels of inspiration and innovation that were set back in 1964, with the world’s first and best ever “Garage” anthem – “Rosalyn”.
Under-rated and often overlooked, The Pretty Things have had a seminal influence on rock music, which is more far-reaching than any casual observation would suggest, and their career is littered with many groundbreaking “firsts” - most of which are not universally known or recognised. Their diverse and unexpected history has spawned countless imitators, many of whom have seen greater commercial success than their heroes, but The Pretty Things remain the original and the best. Not content with being the first ever “garage” band, glowingly acknowledged by Iggy, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Nirvana, & The Libertines, as a primal influence and guiding light. They created a world of rock and roll attitude (the first ever rock & roll drugs bust and a lifetime ban from Australia and New Zealand provide credentials!) and still found time to create a cult world of incredible ground-breaking music - which is as influential now as their attitude was then...... Now read on:
The Pretty Things were responsible for the world’s 1st ever Rock Opera. Recorded in 1967 alongside The Beatles & The Pink Floyd at Abbey Road – “S. F. Sorrow” was the acknowledged template for The Who’s Tommy, and was, in 1998, another first, when it was recorded live at Abbey Road, with David Gilmour on guitar, for the world’s first ever Global Broadband Netcast. This template for the Classic Rock Opera was often copied, but never bettered. Their template for the live recording of a classic album was picked up a few years later, & the shelves are now filled with similar formats of great records - “Forever Changes”, “Oddessey & Oracle”, and many others...... Where The Pretty Things lead, it seems, the rest will follow.
Following “S.F. Sorrow” the band created another, incredibly significant first. They wrote and recorded the remarkable album - “Parachute”. Recorded again at Abbey Road, it was voted Rolling Stone magazine’s first Record of The Year of the 1970’s, outclassing Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, The Stones, and The Who. More importantly, “Parachute” was the only Rolling Stone Record of The Year, ever awarded to Berry Gordy & Tamla Motown, who had cannily signed The Pretty Things the year before, specifically to access the emerging and influential rock and roll album market. Few realise that it took The Pretty Things to grant Berry Gordy his most valued wish.... Album credibility. “Parachute” was recognised by The Pink Floyd” as the inspiration for “Dark Side of The Moon”...... and the rest is history (albeit not that well known!).
In 1974 The Pretty Things were chosen as the first band to sign to Led Zeppelin’s new label – Swansong. This association re-kindled a long-standing relationship with manager, Peter Grant, and the band’s old friends Jimmy Page (who played with them on record in 1965) & Robert Plant. It also spawned two great albums & gave the band their first ever US chart LP, with “Silk Torpedo”. A raft of tours and shows with Zeppelin, & a Hollywood Boulevard Billboard were a tribute to the band’s US status at that time.... and their new profile spawned a lifelong friendship with Aerosmith’s Stephen Tyler – who acknowledges Phil May, the band’s singer, as his primal influence....
Throughout the 1980’s the band undertook the huge task of attempting to get all their recorded copyrights back from their original record companies, who had universally failed to pay them or render any accounts. Undaunted by this massive task, they became the first of the 1960’s bands in history to gain control of all their work. And in 1995, after ten years of court battles, they released another first – a dedicated 2 CD long-box that set the standard for all catalogue releases for the next ten years. The reviews were ecstatic and the set highlighted their incredible career and work. Since the catalogue long-box issue, the band has had all its’ history lovingly re-mastered and re-issued, and their entire catalogue is easily the best presented of almost any of their peer group.
They have remained busy in the last ten years – two great studio albums – Rage Before Beauty & Balboa Island - have been received with 5 Star reviews by the press, and the sales have been parallel with contemporary Stones records. This year they were awarded the first ever Mojo Hero’s Award, presented by Seasick Steve and Kasabian. They played with Bruce Springsteen at Hyde Park (at his request) & headlined the Childline Rocks show at the O2. They even found time to promote a sell-out tribute concert at The 100 Club for lifelong friend and inspiration – Bo Diddley – which was attended by Jimmy Page, and half of London’s press and chattering classes. They work constantly, and headline Festival shows throughout Europe, including The I.O.W. Bestival this year, easily the coolest and most influential of all the UK’s summer offerings.
Last year lifelong publisher and original manager, Bryan Morrison, sadly died, and Phil May was the music representative speaker at his funeral. Bryan built his music and publishing empire on The Pretty Things, and freely admitted he “bought me Polo Club” out of their original royalties. Bryan was the first to acknowledge that he would never have attracted Marc Bolan, The Pink Floyd, Captain Beefheart, or any of his major publishing artists, without the credibility that The Pretty Things provided as his initial publishing act. Managers, agents and publishers who cut their teeth on The Pretty Things include: Bryan, Steve O’ Rourke, Tony Howard, Neil Warnock & Peter Grant. And they all learned how it was done with these guys...
Through their entire career, The Pretty Things have written, performed, and created informed, intelligent, ground-breaking, and original music, enabled by powerful, melodic writing that has kept this incredible band alive for more than 45 years..... This should be a secret that everyone knows...

THE STEVIE NIMMO TRIO

Stevie Nimmo has been successfully recording and touring for the last two decades.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland there was always music around as Stevie grew up. Stevie never had any guitar or singing lessons but throughout the family there were plenty of people who sang or played some kind of instrument to learn from.

After a diagnosis of cancer in 2009 and subsequent surgery resulting in the loss of his voice for over 2 months, Stevie, now living in France, was forced to ease back on his touring schedule with The Nimmo Brothers spending some months in recovery following this major operation. During this period, focusing on the style of music Stevie listens to ’off the park’, he wrote the songs that now make up The Wynds of Life. For Stevie song writing isn’t something that you plan, it’s something that you need to do. As Stevie says; “When you have that something inside you, that feeling be it happy or sad, you just have to let it out. It’s an extremely emotional process and my only way to do that is through song”.

In January 2010 Stevie recorded his first solo album The Wynds of Life at The Zone recording Studios outside Austin, Texas with an A-list of Austin’s finest musicians. Michael Ramos – Keys, George Reiff – Bass, Lloyd Maines – Steel Guitars, Pat Manske – Drums, and as a special guest guitarist David Lee Holt from Storyville. George, Lloyd and Pat are also featured on the current Courtyard Hounds release.

Fleshed out with pedal steel, banjo, accordion, B3 and Wurlitzer, amongst other instruments, The Wynds of Life falls just as easily under the Americana banner with its roots, country and gospel influences as it does in Stevie’s more familiar blues setting.

‘Man that guy can sing!’ David Grissom (storyville)

‘Stevie’s voice is at times gritty, other times emotional but all times perfection!’ Maverick magazine

‘Stevie possesses a great depth to his work. He has come through with an album befitting those lending support and that pretty much says it all.’

Displaying a burning passion to get down and dirty, he becomes neck deep in the swampy Louisiana side of things when he comes up with a future blues steeped rock gem as ‘Long Road To Heaven’..
Muscle Shoals at its peak would be proud of having recorded this track!’ Flyinshoes review

Stevie’s second album was released on Manhaton Records on 4th March 2016 and has gone on to garner reviews including ‘Blues album of the Year’

In 2016 Stevie was also nominated at the British Blues Awards for ‘Best Male Vocalist’, ‘Best Guitarist’ and ‘Best Songwriter’ with The Nimmo Brothers nominated in ‘Best Blues Band’Pete Feenstra – promoter, DJ and Get Ready to Rock reviewer has made Stevie’s ‘Sky Won’t Fall’ his number one pick in his album of the year list. Bluebird blog reviewed ‘Sky Won’t Fall’ here and had some great things to say about it!

“From the imperial attack of the opener Chains Of Hope, a true rock and roll firecracker, bouncing to the almost country-esque ballad Walk The Thin Line, to then buzzing to the sexy riffs of Nimmo’s guitar on that wonderful slow blues that is Gambler’s Roll, Sky Won’t Fall is like a series of pyrotechnical fireworks that dazzle the listeners in every track of the album.

THE DEKE McGHEE BAND

With the authentic sound of the Saxophone led Small Big Bands of the 40s and 50s, Glasgow based Quintet ‘The Deke McGee Band’ perform their own brand of Vintage Rhythm n’ Blues.

As individuals the members of the Deke McGee Band have played with and shared the stage with International Artists such as Buddy Guy, Joe Walsh, Hamish Stuart, Bill Wyman and his Rhythm Kings, Zoot Money and many others...

They're also regulars on the UK scene, and have played alongside home-grown artists such as The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The Fratellis and too many more to mention.

As in-demand Sidemen they have performed all over the world at Jazz and Blues Festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Antwerp, London, Dublin and numerous other places.

Mark ‘Deke’ McGee started playing Saxophone at the age of thirteen, after hearing Bill Doggetts 'Honky Tonk' played by the legendary Clifford Scott. He began studying the sound and the stylings of all the great Swing and Rhythm n’ Blues horn men of that era; Arnett Cobb, Illinois Jacquet, Herschel Evans, Lee Allen, Sil Austin, Red Prysock, Big Al Sears, Plas Johnson, Sam 'the man' Taylor and the great Texas Tenor King Curtis.

He began working as a sideman with bands all over Europe and North America at many Jazz and Blues Festivals. This saw him recording, supporting and sharing the stage with names such as Buddy Guy, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, Big Joe Turner's Memphis Blues Caravan, Hamish Stuart, Bill Wyman and his Rhythm Kings, Phil Guy, Lazy Lester, Sugar Blue, Zoot Money, Otis Grand, George Melly, The Fratellis, Band Of Friends, Martin Stephenson, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Big George and the Business, The Nimmo Brothers, The Cobramatics, The Beatstalkers and many more.

Deke began writing and recording his own material in 2003, but put the project on hold for more than a decade whilst he built up his reputation as a teacher of the saxophone. In 2015 he started recording again and assembled "The Deke McGee Band" to showcase his original material live for the first time. "All Night Long" was released in April 2016.
