Event description

Description

The William Arrol Building is a modern university building which houses the museum collection of the Scotland Branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Some 300 items forming the majority of items in the collection are on display.

On display will be a unique collection of items from all three bridges over the Forth (some recently acquired), a fine selection of surveying instruments, early 19th Century plate rails and much more. The full catalogue is available on the museum’s website https://web.sbe.hw.ac.uk/ICE_Museum/.

The event is being organised as a set of six guided tours of up to twelve visitors per tour starting at 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, 14.00 and 15.00. Each tour will last about 60 minutes and can be booked (free of charge) via the SELECT A TIME button (above right). We will meet visitors at the west door of the William Arrol Building. Ina addition a number of items not on permanent display will be on show together with a number of videos and short films. Please book in advance if you wish to ensure your inclusion in a tour. As numbers are strictly limited, you may be disappointed if you turn up but have not booked.

On Saturdays the campus is well served by Lothian Buses services 25 and 34. Service 34 is more convenient for the William Arrol Building and operates to a 15-20 minute frequency from the city centre and has a stop (36246945) close to the William Arrol Building on Boundary Road North. Service 25 operates to a 12-15 minute frequency but completes its journey at the University Main Entrance and this will involve a longer outdoor walk to the west door of the William Arrol Building.

Ample free car parking is available in the nearby Car Park K accessed off Fourth Gait at the west end of Boundary Road North. Three disabled parking bays are located adjacent to the west door of the William Arrol Building.

Signs from the bus stop and Car Park K will direct you to the west door of the William Arrol Building.

Other Doors Open Day events on the Heriot-Watt campus will also take place on the same day – why not combine your tour of the museum with a visit to these events. The Lyell Centre - home of earth and marine sciences in Scotland - brings together scientists from Heriot-Watt University and the British Geological Survey. You can find out about our ground-breaking research through hand-on activities and exciting talks – from the tiniest creatures, to VR and robotics.
