Join us for the launch of the Edinburgh Journal, where Sir Mark Jones (former Interim Director of the British Museum) and Professor Camilla Toulmin (Senior Fellow at the Africa-Europe Foundation) will introduce some of their favourite essays from the collection.

From pirates in the Bay of Bengal and a slave fortress in Ghana to Cuban art and a year spent on the wild coastlands of Cape Cod, this is a truly eclectic mix of voices and stories.

Five of the fifteen featured authors will be present to chat, including Mary Ethna Black, this year’s Edinburgh Essay Award winner, who began writing in her 60s and has since won or been listed for more than 30 literary awards.

All the essays in the Edinburgh Journal were shortlisted for the 2025 Edinburgh Essay Award, a new venture from the Scottish Arts Trust, with Sir Mark Jones and Professor Camilla Toulmin as the judges.

Come celebrate!
