Edinburgh Medical Debate 2020
Event Information
About this Event
Brought to you by Edinburgh Medical School in collaboration with the Edinburgh University Medical Students Council, this prestigious annual debate returns for a sixth year.
Each year our medical students select a contentious topic relating to the practice of medicine or field of medical sciences for debate amongst an expert panel.
These high profile and exciting events are open to students, staff, members of the public and anyone with an interest in the topic. Online for the first time ever, we look forward to being able to welcome a worldwide audience to this topical debate.
This year's panel will include representatives from medicine, politics, social science and research. They have been invited to stimulate discussions around the topic of public trust in healthcare professionals, scientists and politicians in the context of the current pandemic.
The panel currently includes:
Dr Gwenetta Curry, Lecturer of Race, Ethnicity, and Health, University of Edinburgh
Dr Punam Krishan, Glasgow based GP and Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Glasgow
Professor Jamie Davies, Chair of Experimental Anatomy, University of Edinburgh
Helen McArdle, journalist and health correspondent for The Herald.
Adam Mallis, Edinburgh medical student
Maddy Warren, Patient Engagement Consultancy Director and kidney patient advocate
As we experience the second wave of Covid-19 here in the UK, there is no doubt how relevant this topic is. With so many commentators, advisors and forms of media available to us, who can we and do we trust for accurate medical information in 2020?
Join us to find out.
Throughout the panel discussion and in advance, there will be opportunities to submit your viewpoint on the matter and ask questions of our panel. We will also be running a poll so that you can have your say on who we trust in 2020.
