Newhaven was founded in 1603 by James IV for the purposes of building The Great Michael warship. Over the years, it developed into an active although insular fishing village with its own unique culture and customs. Gordon Young of Newhaven Heritage will give a broad-brush depiction of the history of this little port from its founding to the present day. Author Chris Garner will describe in more intimate detail the life of the village and the lives of its inhabitants from the period of 1928 - the beginning of the end of its connection to the fishing industry - until 1978 when Newhaven was "modernised". His latest book, "Newhaven, A Scottish Fishing Community" built on the reminiscences of the villagers who lived in this period, has been well received and is now on its third reprint.
