About this event
I'm a foraging teacher with a passion for wild food and drink. Each walk is unique, responding to the plants and fungi which are in season at the time.
“Here we go a-foraging, the harvest has arrived, berries, nuts, mushrooms and there's seeds to be dried"
We start and finish the walk from the grounds of Edmondsham House (more details below). We start with an introduction to the various types of fungi and how they grow, then discuss safe and sustainable foraging while sampling a cup of medicinal mushroom tea.
We'll explore Edmondsham Woods, stopping to identify and discuss the properties, history and folklore of the species we find along the way.
Please bring your own picnic lunch, which will be supplemented by wild-flavoured snacks and seasonal drinks along the way.
The walk will be at a gentle pace but terrain includes long grass and muddy footpaths. Children under 10 are free of charge and young people agead 10-18 are welcome at the concession rate.
I believe that fungi identification and foraging knowledge should be available to all regardless of their financial situtation, so the concession rate is also available for home educators, students and those on low income.
Frequently asked questions
We start and finish the walk from the grounds of Edmondsham House. Please park in the courtyard; if there are no more parking spaces left in the courtyard, please use the overflow parking in front of the house. Please stick to the one-way system around the walled garden, as indicated by the signs.
Please wear sensible sturdy footwear; walking boots or wellies. Come prepared for all weather, as we will only cancel for extreme wind or rain. Waterproofs and umbrellas may be helpful at this time of year.
This introductory walk is focused on identification rather than harvesting, but you are welcome to bring a bag or basket to take home some of your finds. A notebook and camera are recommended for documenting interesting discoveries.
Yes, children and young people are very welcome! Please select the appropriate ticket at checkout: Free for children under 10 and Concession for young people aged 10-18.
Unfortunately no dogs are allowed on the permissive paths through the woods.
There are toilets at the courtyard at Edmondsham House.
