Description

Bright Blue’s Forums are spaces for those on the centre-right to come together to chat about politics and discuss policy.

The Education Forum is an informal, fun and interactive opportunity to discuss and explore ideas and suggestions that relate to education policy. The intention of the forum is to produce policies that will allow the UK to offer world class education for all, regardless of birth, background or personal circumstances.

For this forum, we are joined by Dr Scott Kelly.

Dr Scott Kelly lectures on British Politics at New York University (NYU) and works as a policy adviser to the Rt. Hon John Hayes MP who was Minister for Further Education and Skills and Lifelong Learning between 2010 -12. He has also worked for the Learning and Skills Network. Prior to the 2005 election he was a member of the Conservative Party Policy Unit.

Dr Kelly is the author of The Myth of Mr Butskell: The Politics of British Economic Policy 1950-55 (Ashgate, 2002) and of various academic articles and policy papers. His published work on further education and skills includes: Towards a Gold Standard for Craft: Guaranteeing Professional Apprenticeships, with John Hayes (Centre for Policy Studies, 2007); Defining Skills Need: The Role of Recognition of Technician Status, (Gatsby Foundation, 2013), Raising Productivity by Improving Higher Technical Education: Tackling the level 4 and level 5 Conundrum (Higher Education Policy Institute, 2015) and, most recently, Reforming BTECs: Applied General qualifications as a route to higher education (Higher Education Policy Institute, 2017).
