Description

Dialogue Alone: Teaching Solitude and Loneliness Through RE and Spiritual Development

Professor Julian Stern, Professor of Education and Religion at York St John University

Professor Stern’s presentation is about being alone in school, trivially and profoundly, in good ways and in bad. And in dialogue. The presentation’s aim is to understand loneliness and solitude in specific religious traditions, in order to provide a range of opportunities (in RE and spiritual development) for exploring how to understand being alone, and in order to provide a range of ways of dealing with being alone. This presentation, based on research for Julian Stern’s Loneliness and Solitude in Education, describes how RE and spiritual development inform and are illuminated by issues of loneliness and solitude in education, and may, in turn, help value individuality and create a more ‘enstatic’ school.

The seminar is free to attend and open to all.
