Description

Educational trajectories of looked after children across the primary years of schooling

Children in care are one of the lowest performing groups educationally. Nonetheless, little is known concerning stability or change in their educational trajectories, in particular across the primary years of schooling. The current study linked the National Pupil Database and the Children Looked after Database in England for a complete cohort of children (N = 1600) who had been in care during their early years foundation stage in 2010 with the aim of : a) examining the overall growth trajectory of their academic performance between ages 5 to 11, over three points in time (ages 5, 7 and 11); b) identifying distinct subgroups of children demonstrating different trajectories of academic performance during this period; and c) exploring whether children’s early individual, care and school characteristics predict their membership in these groups.

The presentation will discuss the findings of this nationally representative longitudinal exploration and their implications for policy and practice.
