MATHS &  MUD!

'ENABLING EFFECTIVE EARLY MATHS SKILLS EXPERIENCES, THROUGH EXCELLENT SENSORY  PROVISION & SENSORY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES.'

Led by experienced Early Years Teacher and HE Lecturer (FdA Early Childhood), Hannah O’Donnell.

This 2hr Early Years CPD workshop looks at the importance of:

Access to and enhancement of MULTI - SENSORY PLAY provision and experiences both outside and in, within settings and schools, (water tables, sand trays/ pits, mud and dirt!), in order to enable young children to develop their core mathematical skills and understanding of key early mathematical concepts, vital for later formal learning and positive learning behaviours.

It will specifically look at HOW sensory play provision & experiences can elevate young children's early mathematical & conceptual understanding, skills & WHY this directly impacts upon later learning, in terms of the breadth and depth of their mathematical skillls, understanding and application.

...'It's not about numbers in the water tray! ....

Course Synopsis:

Suitable for -  Early Years practitioners, Managers, Teachers, childminders,T.A's & those working with 0-5 age group.

What will I get out of the course?

  • UNDERSTAND how supporting healthy brain development in young children, as they uniquely grow & learn, throguh engaging and effectuve environments later impacts on attainment, positive learning behaviours and reaching unqiue potential, especially in terms of Maths skills.
  • HOW the EY ENVIRONMENT and PRACTITIONER TALK can greatly enable and enhance effective mathematical skills development, utilising sensory play experiences and opportunities.
  • SIMPLE EXPLANATIONS of the key learning processes specifically involved with SENSORY play (ie involving water trays/ sand/ mud etc) and how these DIRECTLY LINK to Higher level cognitive processes (attention, memory, language, reasoning and problem solving - EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING skills etc) that are necessary for and HIGHLY PREDICTIVE of later achievement
  • WHAT it means (WHY important from a research perspective) to develop core mathematical skills for ALL young children (babies upwards) through playful engangement.
  • WHAT these KEY EARLY MATHS SKILS are (from perceptual subitising to partitioning etc) and examples.
  • HOW early maths skills can translate to EY practice, provision and planning - maths is everywhere!
  • PROVISION: A comprehensive understanding of how utilising and setting up the water, sand and mud trays/ provision both outside and in, can elevate early mathematical understanding for young children through following interest and developing EASY enhancements which provide physical challenge, opportunities, risk and problem solving.
  • Understanding potential NEGATIVE factors affecting the healthy development of key mathematical skill development, Sensory needs (SPD/ ASD etc), Technology usage, lack of risky play experiences etc.
  • Some COST EFFECTIVE ideas for developing excellent and engaging sensory play provision which enhances early maths experiences .
  • EMPOWERED  PRACTITIONER understanding of how to assist  and elevate the unique child develop their mathematical skills through, child-led interest, sensory play provision set up, as well as modelling, language used and ongoing reflective practice, based on research-led findings.

Full workshop E-notes, will be given to attendees for their personal use, as well as key references and suggested reading based on the workshop and a CPD certificate of completion.
