ENABLING CHALLENGE & RISK IN PROVISION AND PLAY TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT, LEARNING & EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING SKILLS.

Exploring WHY and HOW Early years Educators can use aspects of challenge and 'risky' play across their provision (inside and out) to enable greater independence, problem solving skills, resilience, depth of learning, as well as greater executive functioning (psycho-cognitive skills of memory, attention, self regulation etc) for young children as they grow and learn.

(Online CPD session, with pre-event reflective practitioner pack and course notes pre-reading, plus CPD certificate upon completion).

This CPD short course aims to support understanding and application of theory , research and excellent early years practice relating to the benefits of exploring challenge and risk in play and provision - to enhance, learning, skills and unique development, plus academic and life outcomes of the unique child

It will look at the potential for supporting challenge and risk to enhance outcomes, in the context of contemporary life for children today (COVID 19 restrictions, increased screen time, less time outside, 'fear' of risk etc).

It will specifically address why risk and challenge are essential to support all children as individuals, in terms of their own healthy 'risk assessment' ability, but moreover - the use of challenge to enhance development of executive functioning in the brain , eg; problem solving skills, emotional intelligence, self regulation, attention and memory - key positive learning behaviours - highly predictive of outcomes.

COURSE DETAILS:

Suitable for all those working with young children professionally in education and care, teachers, practitioners, managers, Heads, Child minders, TA's etc.

Through this NEW short course, it is aimed to explore some ESSENTIAL key concepts to empower practices and provision related to enabling risk and challenge for young children, based on a sound understanding of the importance of this and links to the later outcomes of children- both academically and in life skills.

The course will address (this list is not exhaustive):

*Understanding challenge and risk - what this looks like in provision and play.

*Why 'risky' activities are essential for healthy brain and body development for life skills and academic learning.

*Risk and challenge in contemporary society for children - lack of independence, screen time, reduced executive functioning skills, effects of COVD 19 etc - linked to recent research and outcomes.

*Theories of 'risk' and challenge - related to cognitive development, social development and understanding the role of risky play.

*Relevant factors for the educator - risk assessment, HSE and enabling 'risky' play, as part of planning for provision and play.

*Risk and challenge as part of essential and predictive Executive functioning skills (Positive learning behaviours) - problem solving, ordering, memory, attention etc.

*Examples of challenge and risk within play and provision - plus enabling concepts of managing risk, problem solving and developing independence across the setting/ school day.

At the end of the course you should better understand what risk and challenge are, why they are essential to young children as they develop and grow within their brains and bodies, how these concepts link to executive functioning (and what this is), as well as cost effective ways to address 'risky play and provision' in your setting, to support and enable all children to grow and learn.

Please note: The course is split across 3 parts in order to allow delegates to gain the most from the information, learning, reflection and their final participation

Part 1 - Course pre-notes : Pre-event course notes (released 1 x week via online link/ email prior to the course for you to do in your own time and support your understanding of the final session);

Part 2 - Reflections: A voluntary reflective practitioner question & planning document .

Part 3: A live 1 hour course session (in limited group size) with the course leader and other delegates to put the learning into practice - this will be on a given date / time for you to access online and join and the link will be given upon sign up to/ payment for the course. Q and A can also be given at this session.

Course references will also be given at this session - for extra reading and useful support and the opportunity for feedback and a CPD certificate of attendance.

Online details : These will be sent out prior to the event date. PLEASE ensure you have given the details of the attendees, so that they are welcomed into the training via the waiting room, as if they are unexpected, then it is not guaranteed entry for the session.

Ticket refunds:

Tickets are non-refundable, however in exceptional circumstances, please email the organiser, as we may be able to offer a different date, if available.

If you are ill on the day, you are permitted to get a colleague to access your training for you, however, please let the organiser know.

Payment;

ALL payments must be made prior to the event start, to ensure access to course content.

If you wish to pay by BACS or cheque - please tick ' pay by cheque' and email: empoweringearlyyears@gmail.com to request your bespoke invoice. You will STILL need to register online to ensure your place (s) on the course.

Fees include the online cost for processing from Eventbrite.

Group Bookings: These are at reduced rate of 5 delegates for the price of 4 (and only one group option available for this event), however PLEASE EMAIL the list of delegates or an email address so that they are included on the invitation to the course online as the system does not automatically do this. Thank you!

Data Protection:

All details on the booking will be used for communications regarding the course. Your secure contact details shall not be held for any other purpose or shared with other parties. Email details will be used for sending out CPD certificates at the latest, 10 days post the event and then details are no longer kept.

Access: If you require any special consideration for access to any of the given course content items, please let the organiser know, as we are currently developing supporting documents to enable those with additional learning needs and different media to access our materials in the way that suits them best.
