About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Welcome to the Effective Communication Strategies in Dementia event at St Andrews Community Hospital. Communication challenges are one of the most difficult aspects of caring for a loved one with dementia. As memory, comprehension, and language skills decline, frustration and misunderstandings can arise, making everyday interactions stressful for both carers and those with dementia.

Join us for this informative and practical session designed to help carers develop effective communication techniques. You’ll learn how to:

  • Adapt your communication style to reduce confusion and distress.
  • Use body language, tone, and visual cues for better understanding.
  • Respond to repetitive questions, agitation, and emotional outbursts with patience and empathy.
  • Create a calm and supportive environment to ease interactions.

The Dementia Carers Education Programme has been developed through a partnership project of NHS Fife, Fife Health and Social Care Partnership, Alzheimer Scotland, Fife Carers Centre and STAND. The programme is open to all unpaid carers who care for someone living with dementia. All sessions are optional, and you are welcome to attend more than once as your needs as a carer change. The aim of the programme is educational, to support you to gain practical knowledge and skills, learning from skilled health and social care professionals, as well as connecting with other carers.
