Workshop Outline

Many people use delegation as a way of offloading routine tasks which they don’t like or don’t think they have the time to do. However, used properly, delegation is an effective way of managing personal time and developing teams and individuals. At the end of the course you will understand the need for delegation and how personal and organizational efficiency can be improved through systematic delegation.

This course will help you:

  • Understand the meaning and purpose of “delegation” and the critical role of empowerment in enabling delegation to be effective
  • Have explored your own job role and the elements that could and should be delegated to team members
  • Appreciate the pro’s and con’s of delegation of elements of own job role
  • Implement practical tools, tips and techniques of effective delegation
  • Understand steps in the delegation process
  • Improve skills in handling conversations to agree mutual expectations

Pre-work

  • You will be asked to reflect on the extent to which you currently delegate to your team and on your skills in doing so


What the course will give you

  • The chance to plan the appropriate level of delegation for your team
  • Explore how to delegate the appropriate level of authority as well as responsibility
  • Improved skills in handling conversations to agree mutual expectations


Learning Journey for Effective Delegation

  • Defining delegation – temporary Vs developmental delegation
  • Identifying elements of own job role that could be “delegated” to members of one’s team
  • Why delegate? What’s in it for me and my team members?
  • Steps in the delegation process – and overcoming obstacles (delegation model)
  • Practice sessions of conversations to agree mutual expectations
  • Mini-case studies based on your own work situations to explore the principles and practicalities of delegation
  • Empowerment – delegation of authority as well as responsibility
  • Action planning to define areas of potential delegation back at work
  • You will be asked to reflect on the extent to which you currently delegate to their teams and on their skills in doing so
