Effective family language policies for Galician language transmission: Parental language management before and during the pandemic lockdown

Each person, regardless of age, has linguistic practices within the family to which they belong, as well as beliefs about the choice of language(s) in a multilingual society. Therefore, linguistic practices within the family sphere are crucial for understanding the process of intergenerational transmission of a minority language. In these practices, family language policy, its relationships with governmental language policies, and ideologies and discourses about language are key and require special attention for understanding, interpretation, and analysis. The main objective of this article is to investigate parental strategies for the intergenerational transmission of Galician in urban/per-urban habitats of Galicia, where Spanish is the primary language of socialization. Drawing from ethnographic data, field notes, observation, semi-structured individual interviews conducted with parents, and two discussion groups with four families each will be analyzed. The article aims to contribute knowledge about the agency of pro-Galician parents who, through their beliefs, management, and individual linguistic practices, play a significant role in the revitalization and maintenance of Galician outside of school, specifically within the household.

Anik Nandi earned his PhD in 2017 as a prestigious James Watt Fellow from the Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Dr. Nandi is currently working as an Associate Professor of Multicultural Communication in the School of Business at Woxsen University, Telangana, India. He is also the Founding Director of the Centre for Languages and Multicultural Communication and Joseph Lo Bianco Chair for Language Policy Studies in his current institution. Prior to this, Anik worked as a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of the Basque Country, Spain where he conducted original research on the intergenerational transmission of Basque (in Spain) and Santali (in India) languages. The aforementioned project scored 97.5 out of 100 securing an individual funding of 97,800 Euros for 3 years from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Union’s Covid Recovery Fund. Anik is also a Senior Research Associate (Hon.) at the Sociolinguistic Seminar of the Royal Galician Language Academy (Spain), a Visiting Researcher at the Leiden Centre for Linguistics (The Netherlands), and a Collaborator at the research centre attached to the UNESCO Chair on World Language Heritage in the University of the Basque Country (Spain). Dr. Nandi specialises in language policy and literacy practices in multilingual settings and his research papers appeared in many prestigious international journals linked to Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics. Since 2021, he works as the Book Reviews Editor of the Sociolinguistic Studies journal (ISSN: 1750-8649; Scopus and Q2), Equinox Publishing, United Kingdom.

Micropolíticas lingüisticas en las familias gallegas: estrategias para la transmisión intergeneracional del gallego

Cada individuo, independientemente de su edad, tiene prácticas lingüísticas propias en el seno de la familia a la que pertenece y además unas creencias sobre la elección de la(s) lengua(s) en una sociedad multilingüe. Por lo tanto, las prácticas lingüísticas en el ámbito familiar son sumamente importantes para entender el proceso de transmisión intergeneracional de un idioma minoritario. En estas prácticas, la política lingüística familiar, sus relaciones con las políticas lingüísticas gubernamentales, sus ideologías y discursos sobre la lengua son claves y requieren una atención especial para su comprensión, interpretación y análisis. El principal objetivo de este artículo es investigar las estrategias parentales para la transmisión intergeneracional del gallego en los hábitats urbanos/periurbanos de Galicia, donde el castellano es el idioma principal de socialización. Partiendo de datos etnográficos, se analizarán notas de campo y observación, entrevistas semiestructuradas individuales realizadas con progenitores y dos grupos de discusión con cuatro familias cada uno. El artículo trata de aportar conocimiento sobre la agencia de los padres pro gallego que, a través de sus creencias, gestión y prácticas lingüísticas individuales, juegan un papel significativo en la revitalización y mantenimiento del gallego fuera de la escuela, concretamente en el ámbito doméstico.

El Dr. Anik Nandi obtuvo su doctorado en 2017 en la Universidad Heriot-Watt, Edimburgo, Reino Unido. Actualmente, el Dr. Nandi trabaja como profesor de Comunicación Multicultural en la Escuela de Negocios de la Universidad Woxsen, Telangana, India. También es el Director Fundador del Centro de Lenguas y Comunicación Multicultural y titular de la Cátedra Joseph Lo Bianco para Estudios de Política Lingüística en su institución. Antes de esto, Anik trabajó como Investigador Postdoctoral Senior en la Universidad del País Vasco, España, donde realizó investigaciones originales sobre la transmisión intergeneracional de los idiomas vasco (en España) y santalí (en India). El proyecto mencionado anteriormente obtuvo una calificación de 97.5 sobre 100, asegurando un financiamiento individual de 97,800 euros por 3 años del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España y del Fondo de Recuperación Covid de la Unión Europea. Anik también es Investigador Asociado Senior (Hon.) en el Seminario Sociolingüístico de la Real Academia Gallega de la Lengua (España), Investigador Visitante en el Centro de Lingüística de Leiden (Países Bajos) y Colaborador en el centro de investigación adjunto a la Cátedra UNESCO sobre el Patrimonio Lingüístico Mundial en la Universidad del País Vasco (España). El Dr. Nandi está especializado política lingüística y prácticas de alfabetización en entornos multilingües y sus trabajos de investigación han aparecido en numerosas revistas internacionales prestigiosas relacionadas con estudios culturales y lingüística aplicada. Desde 2021, trabaja como editor de reseñas de la revista Sociolinguistic Studies (ISSN: 1750-8649; Scopus y Q2), Equinox Publishing, Reino Unido.
